Beckers’ 2030 Sustainability Strategy

UN and world leaders call the years up to 2030 the “Decade of Action." We are clear that it will be actions, not just words or our strategy, that will create impact. We have therefore worked quickly to translate our goals into activities. In the last three years, sustainability at Beckers has not only become a top priority, our Sustainability Strategy has set the transformation of the whole company in motion. We want to lead the industry towards a more sustainable world.

More than ten years ago, we decided to follow a sustainable path and have made continuous progress toward putting sustainability at the core of our business ever since. Our efforts are guided by our 2030 Sustainability Strategy which includes clearly defined goals and sets clear milestones. Since its launch in 2020, we’ve constantly made progress as can be reviewed in our annual sustainability reports.

After publishing our 2030 Sustainability Strategy in July 2020, we fully rolled it out across the company in 2021. Each Beckers site and function now have their own dedicated sustainability roadmap.

The 2030 Sustainability Strategy is divided into the three streams People with impact, Products with impact and Operations with impact. Each stream contains ambitious goals and actionable key performance indicators. The goals are based on our ➜ material topics which we updated in 2022 together with the strategy.

2022 strategy and goals review

In September 2022 the ➜ Beckers Sustainability Council (BSC) reviewed the 2030 Sustainability Strategy goals to see whether aspects of it needed to be improved. The strategy had been designed before Covid-19, before the supply chain disruptions and before the war in Ukraine. Because the world around us is changing rapidly and dramatically, it’s important to reflect on and adapt our goals so they remain relevant and effective.

The good news is, all BSC participants agreed that the strategy is the right way to go, with no fundamental changes required at this time. In some areas, we needed to determine KPIs and set goals, such as for Water and Community Engagement and for the 2030 target for renewable electricity, which we already achieved. We discussed setting higher ambitions and agreed on changes that were communicated to all Beckers colleagues at the beginning of 2023 and are shared with the public for the first time in this report.

„The world around us is changing rapidly and dramatically. We reflected on that and adapted our goals so they remain relevant and effective.”

Nicklas Augustsson | Global Sustainability Director

It is very important to keep our eye on the future and where we want to go from here. As visible in the graphic above, we will not change our long-term vision or general strategy; it gives our employees orientation and motivation during turbulent times. But it is important that we are flexible with regard to its implementation and the speed at which we move today.

Progress toward our goals

Today we have a formal ➜ sustainability governance structure in place to monitor our progress, our Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and steer the actions in the three streams. We ensure transparency through several internal as well as external commitments. Sustainability is linked directly to our global management and we ensure that all sustainability topics are embedded across the whole company. The progress we made toward our goals in 2022 is set out in detail in this report.
